    Green in Your Wallet or a Green Planet: Views on Government Spending and Climate Change

    The scientific community is a near consensus that climate change is not only anthropogenic but is also a major threat to people around the world. Despite the alarm bells from the scientific community many people in the United States simply deny the science of climate change. Many studies have targeted level of education, party membership, and gender in their role in influencing how individuals perceive climate change. This study showed that views on government spending plays a very important role in the importance of the environment. Individuals who supported decreased government spending tend to view jobs as more important than the environment when compared to individuals who supported increased government spending, this is true among both Republicans and non-Republicans. Generally speaking, the Republican platform typically involves the economy over the environment, and the Democratic platform typically involves more environmentally friendly action. This study posits Republicans that believed the government should increase spending in 2012 were indistinguishable from non-Republicans who supported reductions in government spending. The inability to distinguish between republicans who believe in increased spending and non-republicans who believe in increased spending suggests that views on the environment may be more than simply a partisan issue they may simply have to do with willingness to spend money on the environment

    Blue Sky Olympics: Satellite Observations of Air Quality During the 2008 Beijing Olympics

    China has imposed short-term emission control regulations on industry and transportation to quickly improve air quality during certain events, including the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Previous research noted reductions in NO2 vertical column density, CO emissions, CO2 emissions, and Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD). NO2 and SO2 decreased in neighboring provinces, during this time period. Using MODIS level-2 atmospheric aerosol product (MYD04_L2) data, processed by the dark target algorithm, this study observes trends in regional AOD and temporal change in AOD during the Olympic emissions reduction program. 2008 observations are referenced against AOD observations from 2003 to 2013, within 9-day intervals from June 23rd to October 24th and 40 km bands extending up to 240 km from the Beijing municipal limits. During the Olympics, median AOD values were below median AOD values from the reference period. AOD levels returned to above reference period levels in the September 12th to September 20th period, before the end of the Special Olympics in Beijing. During the Olympic period, reductions in AOD values, compared to the reference period were observed in regions within 80 km of Beijing, while an increase in AOD values was present in regions 120 km to 240 km from Beijing

    On the effect of SNR and superdirective beamforming in speaker diarisation in meetings

    This paper examines the effect of sensor performance on speaker diarisation in meetings and investigates the use of more advanced beamforming techniques, beyond the typically employed delay-sum beamformer, for mitigating the effects of poorer sensor performance. We present superdirective beamforming and investigate how different time difference of arrival (TDOA) smoothing and beamforming techniques influence the performance of state-of-the-art diarisation systems. We produced and transcribed a new corpus of meetings recorded in the instrumented meeting room using a high SNR analogue and a newly developed low SNR digital MEMS microphone array (DMMA.2). This research demonstrates that TDOA smoothing has a significant effect on the diarisation error rate and that simple noise reduction and beamforming schemes suffice to overcome audio signal degradation due to the lower SNR of modern MEMS microphones.     Saperda inornata attacks on hybrid Populus were monitored in a stand for four years after planting. More than 60% of the whips were attacked the first year, resulting in a mean of 1.6 galls/tree (range 0-8). Branch attacks superseded stem attacks in the third and fourth years. Saperda injury significantly reduced height because of leader breakage after the second-year attacks, but the injured trees grew rapidly and recovered much of the height in the third and fourth years. Saperdas killed 4% of the trees during the study, but this was no more than would be expected in a newly established stand. Saperda, at the population levels studied, does not seem to greatly affect hybrid Populus growth or to reduce biomass

    Vortex macroscopic superpositions in ultracold bosons in a double-well potential

    We study macroscopic superpositions in the orbital rather than the spatial degrees of freedom, in a three-dimensional double-well system. We show that the ensuing dynamics of NN interacting excited ultracold bosons, which in general requires at least eight single-particle modes and (N+7N){N+7 \choose N} Fock vectors, is described by a surprisingly small set of many-body states. An initial state with half the atoms in each well, and purposely excited in one of them, gives rise to the tunneling of axisymmetric and transverse vortex structures. We show that transverse vortices tunnel orders of magnitude faster than axisymmetric ones and are therefore more experimentally accessible. The tunneling process generates macroscopic superpositions only distinguishable by their orbital properties and within experimentally realistic times.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Transthoracic three-dimensional echocardiography for the assessment of straddling tricuspid or mitral valves

    Background The advent of 3D echocardiography has provided a technique which, potentially, could afford significant additional information over conventional cross-sectional echocardiography in the assessment of patients with straddling atrioventricular valves prior to surgical correction. Methods Eight patients, aged from 1 month to 9˙2 years, were examined with 3D echocardiography. All but three had discordant ventriculoarterial connections or double outlet right ventricle. Data suitable for reconstruction was acquired with transthoracic scanning. Right and left ventricular volumes were calculated in the 3D dataset. Results 3D echocardiography proved capable of defining the exact degree of straddling by imaging theproportion of tension apparatus attached to either side of the ventricular septum. It was able also to display the atrioventricular junction “en face”, thus permitting identification of the precise site of insertion of the muscular ventricular septum relative to the atrioventricular junction. This made it possiblefirst, to calculate the degree of valvar override, and second, to predict the location of the penetrating atrioventricular bundle. End-diastolic volume of the right ventricle in those with straddling tricuspid valves was 73 (61–83)% of normal, and, of the left ventricle in those with mitral valvar straddling 71 (40‐97)% of normal. Conclusions 3D echocardiography can aid in planning the optimal surgical procedure in patients with straddling or overrriding atrioventricular valves, as it provides diagnostic information superiorto standard crosssectional techniques. It also allows for exact measurement of the volumes of the respective ventricles
